After "The master said" (1971), "Love that" (1972) was the second progressive longplayer of the Roland Kovac New Set, again instrumental and with jazzy touches, playful organ solos and wild guitars, very much in the mood of the time. Instead of Franz Löffler, Peter Trunk played bass, Keith Forsey had replaced Charly Antolini on drums and Brian Auger joined on keyboards. The two remaining members of the original line-up were master Roland Kovac himself on keyboards and guitar wizard Siegfried Schwab, previously with Et Cetera and Embryo. Lovers of "The master said" will not be disappointed by "Love that". Although still relatively unknown, both LPs have a collectors´ prices from US$ 250 to US$ 400. The simple original uniform copper-metallic coloured cover was, as usual on Garden of Delights, used for the CD release, too..

The Master Said/…..The album begins with the 17-plus minute title track, which itself is broken down in to 25 parts. As the liner notes explain, the breakdown between parts has more to do with instrumentation or feel rather than concept. With the intention of it being used for background music, you might think of those 25 segments more as cues. Löffler’s throaty bass leads things off assertively (though the tiny, tiny original liner notes say “electro-piano”) to which are added one by one, crisp, taut drum and percussion, then jazzy, solid guitar playing and finally organ. This is progressive rock by way of jazz, but is certainly very much in tune with the progressive rock of the time. While sonically there is no similarity, I am going to name check ELP because I hear a very similar dynamic - though Kovac doesn’t abuse his keys the way Emerson did - and had no need to. But even saying ELP is misleading, because you might think of Wakeman more (at times) with Kovac’s playing - assigning no influence in that. A moody guitar and bass duet comes at the 10 minute mark, leading into a drum solo from Antolini, each highlighting these obviously skilled musicians – Kovac, Schwab and Antolini had already made a name for themselves when they got together to record this music. Löffler, who passed away in the 70s, was the lesser known member of this quartet, but had appeared on numerous albums leading up to this point. You might think, in the hands of average musicians, that a 17-plus minute piece would get boring, dull or repetitive …Not here, as it holds interest throughout…

Love That/….The pieces on Love That are shorter, most falling the 4 - 5 minute range, though one track, “Genesis,” falls in the 9-minute range. There is a reason why Schwab is a renowned jazz and new age guitarist - his playing is impeccable. His playing in the opening track “Guru” has a freer, “70s” sound - distorted and a little sexy, with a bit of a “wah-wah” effect applied (maybe more than a bit). “Love That” is different yet again, as tentative keys prod the silence while drums, percussion and a second organ come in to urge the first to cut loose. Before too long they’re in the right groove, “organ one” finding it’s confidence. This is arrangement, by the way, not in the playing or talent. “Sivertime” (which was supposed to be “Silvertime,” but a persistence of typos at the time stuck). This is a more studied piece, after the initial blast of organs (a phrase that repeats at times throughout the piece). At times you will think of ELP’s Keith Emerson – “Stone Of Years” echoed in my head, but it has more to do with tone and a phrase here and there than anything else. Truck’s bass, which going by the pictures, was an upright, slowly walks its way through the piece. Hmm… this has that Miles Davis kind of coolness about it…..

Originally released in 1971 and most definitely ahead of their time. I mean - THIS is what I consider as cutting edge progressive (at least for it’s time). Title track - the seventeen-minute “The Master Said” is nothing short of pure brilliant playing, as I was also impressed with the ten-minute “Birth Of A Saint” (incredible organ work) and the lp’s two shorter tunes - “Eternal Dimension” and “David’s Dance” are quite melodic. Only possible downside of this CD reissue is the fact that it’s duration is 35 minutes - with no bonus cuts. It’s still very much worth it. Personnel: Roland Kovac - keyboards, Siegfried Schwab - guitar, Fran Loffler - bass and Charly Antolini - drums. 100% essential. …

The second and third of these LPs, “The master said” (Selected Sound 9028) of 1971 and “Love that” (Selected Sound 9030) of 1972, full of playful guitar riffs and complex in structure, are representative of good progressive rock of the early seventies.
The name Roland Kovac New Set might suggest the previous existence of a Roland Kovac Set, but this is not the case as the band, for unknown reasons, started right away as New Set. The line-up on “The master said” features top musicians: Roland Kovac himself (born in Vienna on November 7th, 1927), whose mother was a concert pianist in a family of well-known musicians, joined The Vienna Choir Boys in the 1930s, a sign of musical excellence considering the fact that at the time only one applicant of up to twenty highly gifted talents was selected.
In the course of time he worked with Wilhelm Furtwangler and Otto Klemperer and received a doctorate in music in 1952 with a paper on “Harmonik in der Musik des Spatbarock” (Harmonies in the music of the late barock). He was a renowned composer of numerous classical works and soundtracks for films. In the early 1970s he lived in Munich where he recorded the present LP playing keyboards. He also contributed to countless other LPs on the same label, mostly under another name.
As a good friend of owner Peter Majewski, he played an important role in establishing the Selected Sound label. By the way, his name Kovac (blacksmith) is of Slovenian origin, which means that the final “c” is pronounced as in “chatter”. His very melodic speech gives evidence of how much he is rooted and living in music. Guitarist Siegfried “Sigi” Schwab, of course, is a world-famous musician, especially in the fields of jazz and new-age. As a member of The Vampires’ Sound Incorporation (“Psychedelic dance party”), of Wolfgang Dauners Et Cetera and of Embryo, he was at the beginning of his career. Swiss jazz drummer Charly Antolini, on the other hand, had already released his first records in the mid-1960s.
His probably most famous work is the LP “Knock out” (D 1980: Jeton 100.3304 - as CD: D 1988: Jeton 112), the final blow to many loudspeakers. He is still a top musician today and, together with Sigi Schwab, responsible for the jazzy touch on the LP.
