Castanja "Castanja" Finland 1973 Prog Pop Rock

Castanja "Castanja" Finland 1973 Prog Pop Rock

Today the Finnish kids are raised to know the history of Finnish rock, or let's say rock in Finnish, like this: there had only been translated hits in the 1960s and those were still the rule in the 1970s, but a few brave singer/songwriters (Juice Leskinen, Dave Lindholm, Hector) pioneered a new national style of rock. Of course there was a lot of progressive rock and some prog artists sang in Finnish, but it wasn't until the '70s/'80s turn when the New Wave opened a new era and the Finnish rock – "Suomirock" – was truly established. But in fact there was a lot of rock in Finnish before the New Wave as well and that wasn't limited to a few famous artists. People may know Kaseva, but it was more a pop than a rock act. People may know Alwari Tuohitorvi, but not very well. In theory, people also know Jukka Kuoppamäki, but he is associated with schlagers, though a major part of his mid-1970s music was pop and rock.

Castanja was the backing group of Jukka Kuoppamäki, though originally a band with an identity of its own. But Castanja consisted of high quality musicians, and that is why Kuoppamäki not only used them as his own band but also a general backing act for the artists of his own record label (Satsanga) and – as early as in 1973 – issued an album of their own. Actually, Castanja is a very fine album from the Finnish '73 perspective. A few lyrics are quite poor – Kari Hillo and especially Matti Juva were not Hector or Juice Leskinen – but only in the case of "Svengidisco" that is too much. The opening track is reminiscent of Uriah Heep, and The Beatles comes to my mind now and then. The slightly funky pop rock influences of some numbers are harder to track. (At least they don't include David Bowie.)

My favourite tracks on the album: "Varhainen aamu", "Purjevene", "Kesäkukka", "Katson peiliin" and "Hyvää yötä." Overall, Castanja is not as good as Aurinkomaa by Jukka Kuoppamäki, but still quite nice material, and a positive surprise. ............by.....fairyeee ..............
