Produced by Conny Plank, this is an excellent entry into the large scale German electronic scene. Not really a Berlin School album, though some rhythmic sequencing is present, but still very much informed by late 70's Berlin based artists like Edgar Froese (especially "Ages"), Ash Ra around the time of "New Age of Earth" and Klaus Schulze circa "X". Haunting synthesizers with THAT vibe combined with lightly sprinkled fuzzed and acoustic guitars makes for an album the CDRWL recommends. Side 2 of the album shifts gears a bit and features some vocal numbers that are quite a bit different than the other contents but are strangely engaging all the same. My friend and Gnosis colleague Lev Gankine, who knows far more about obscure German albums than I do, also states on RYM that Metronic Underground reminds him of some of the modern electronic groups on the German indie scene.CDRWL......................

For years I've been hunting for this expensive rarity and finally got it recently from a friend. While I can't say that I'm now eager to spend 400 EUR or whatever a mint copy goes for on eBay these days, "Illusion" indeed turned out an excellent album, worthy of the hype. It's a soft, melodic krautrock record with some catchy songs and incredibly tasty synth work - actually, at times they sound like precursors to current German indie electronic scene, veering startlingly close to bands like The Notwist or various Morr Music residents. Since Germany seems to be pretty well positioned on the CD reissue market thanks to the efforts of the labels like Garden of Delights or Long Hair, I hope someone will tackle this obscure gem as soon as possible - this music deserves to be heard......by......levgan ...........

A big metallic beast from the depth of the underground kingdom is creeping through the city streets in search of something… The beast is scary but it is not dangerous. The beast is kind and dreamy. It has a lot of fantasies and big dreams about love, night flights in the sky and journey to the other planets. This beast might look like illusion if you see it on the empty night city streets, but it’s not. This is not illusion. The beast is real just like his dreams and hopes. It wants you to feel the way it feels and see those things it sees every single night. He wants to make friends with you. Don’t be scared, please, don’t you run away! It would be rude and unfair…

This beast is like a space fairytale. This beast is like an adventurous story that must be told. This beast is unique; it’s one of a kind. Just look at its face! There is a smile on its face! He’s holding out his hand, look! Common, grab his hand! Make friends with this touching beast. Let the beast tell you his stories. You’ll be sitting on a roof, watching this big sky and listening to the stories of love, adventures, cosmic trips and the underground dwellers…

The beast will share special music with you. The only album by Metronic Underground called “Illusion”. It was released in 1981. This German band has recorded an outstanding prog-rock. Just a synthesizer and a guitar. Just you and the beast….......
