This highly enjoyable 1966 set showcases the talents of the brothers who would go on to form million-selling Cajun-funk favorites, Redbone. Produced by Leon Russell (who went on to work with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and countless others), It’s an engaging combination of snappy originals and up-tempo cover versions hat blends blue-eyed soul and garage rock to memorable effect, and makes its CD debut here. I have been a fan for many years of the Native-American rock group Redbone. As I have said a few times in the past they were an original group with a unique sound so different from all the others. Redbone was started by Pat and Lolly Vegas in 1969. Before then Pat and Lolly has worked as successful studio musicians playing for such performers as Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, Sonny and Cher and the “King” himself Elvis Presley. They were also known for their songwriting abilities with singers such as Aretha Franklin, The Righteous Brothers and Bobbie Gentry among others having recorded their songs. Pat and Lolly would even make it onto television becoming part of the house band for the variety show “Shindig” 

By 1966 they would have a regular gig at a haunted house themed nightclub in Los Angeles called “The Haunted House”. That would lead to a recording deal with Mercury Records to make ‘Pat and Lolly At The Haunted House". The album was recorded live at the Haunted House nightclub but I think it was not in front of an audience. It doesn’t matter because in the end this is a great album. For anyone who calls themselves a fan of the group Redbone you have got to add this record to your collection. 

This is a classic recording of the Vegas Brothers displaying the sound they would come to be known for, especially more so later in their recording career with Redbone. “Haunted House” in some ways reminds me of Redbone’s 1974 album “Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes”. The sound and feel of “Haunted House” is very similar to that album. At the same time there is no doubt this is an album from the mid-60’s. It has that well known 60’s rock and roll sound to it from that period that anyone who is around the same age as me will remember. Some of the songs on the album that Pat and Lolly cover were hits during that time with other groups and singers including “In The Midnight Hour”, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, and “Good Lovin’” among them. There are 12 songs altogether with 6 of them cover versions and 6 original songs by the Vegas brothers. The songs written by Pat and Lolly are outstanding and shows them at the top of their game as both songwriters and musicians. The best and I think most interesting song on the album is the ninth track, “Keep Me Up Tight”. If that song title sounds familiar to you it is because it would reappear years later on the Redbone album “Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes” as one of 6 bonus tracks that was included when “Beaded Dreams” was released on CD. The version on “Haunted House” is different from the “Beaded Dreams” version. The earlier version is a little more upbeat with a R and B sound to it while the latter version has definitely more of a bluesy feel to it. 

All in all a great album that is worthy of being in any ones music collection whether you are a fan of Redbone or not. This album can be a little hard to find so if you should come across a copy of it don’t hesitate to get it…by Janet Chandler..amazon…~


Pat & Lolly Vegas are best known as the leaders of Redbone, the pioneering Native American rock band that scored a major hit in 1974 with “Come and Get Your Love,” but they had been playing music since the late '50s as members of Jimmy Clanton’s road band. In the mid-'60s, they had a regular gig at a briefly popular Hollywood nightspot called the Haunted House, and this album was presumably cut with the hopes of turning the Vegas brothers into the Native Peoples’ answer to Johnny Rivers. Produced by Leon Russell and Snuff Garrett, Pat & Lolly Vegas at the Haunted House sure doesn’t sound like it was recorded live (there’s no audible crowd noise or stage patter), but it does confirm that they were already a great, no-nonsense rock & roll band. The set is divided half and half between covers and originals, with Pat and Lolly delivering tough, soulful vocals throughout and putting enough of their own personality into “In the Midnight Hour,” “High Blood Pressure,” and “Baby, I Need Your Loving” that their versions can stand tall besides the originals. Even better are their own tunes, with Pat & Lolly rocking proud on “Keep Me Up Tight,” “Walk On (Right Out of My Life),” and “Let’s Get It On” (not the later Marvin Gaye tune), which merge a rocker’s swing with a soul man’s passion and deliver the goods on both counts. Pat & Lolly Vegas at the Haunted House is 30 minutes of solid fun with a killer dance groove, and suggests that a compilation of the brothers’ early independent singles is in order…..by Mark Deming…allmusic…~

The foundations of Redbone? I think not. Though this presents Redbone founding members in an earlier effort, to think this has anything other than that to do with Redbone is to say that The Quarrymen were the foundations of The Beatles. In both cases, the earlier bands sound nothing like their more famous incarnations. Though released in early '66, this was almost certainly recorded in late 1965. The dawning of 1966 offered a pretty clear demarcation between the early 60’s style dance/pop of 1965 and before, with the more underground releases that started to spring up in '66 and later. Prior to 1966, private releases were comparatively non-existent, and almost anyone who managed to get a record released, did so through a contract with one of the larger labels. And these labels were invariably interested in one thing: selling records. Therefore, you didn’t see a whole lot of bands performing their own personal idea of art. They concentrated on recording music that was popular, and more likely to sell records for their label. By late '65, the brothers Vasquez were already veterans of the professional circuit, getting their start around 6 years before while still in their mid-teens. All of that experience clearly shows on this collection of material, which despite the title and cover art, is not a recording of a live performance. Apparently, it was just recorded at The Haunted House club, using their special bandstand for amplification. The selection is a mix of well-known hit covers of the day, and their own originals. These originals are every bit the equal of the hits also included in their set, and blend in well. Their sound is typical of its vintage, mostly uptempo, dance style male vocal pop. Since this would be considered a studio recording, the sound quality is very good, and this should appeal to fans of early 60’s style pop, and extremely consistently so. But if you are seeking this out looking for anything approaching Redbone, you are likely to be disappointed….by…tymeshifter …~

Well it took me a hundred years but I finally purchased my own vinyl copy of this garage masterpiece. It evaded me for so long. I am a huge fan of REDBONE and when I discovered that brothers Pat & Lolly Vegas had put out an lp in '65, I had to own it! When I found it last week I was a bit terrified after reading the liner notes that this could have been a poorly recorded live lp “recorded at The Haunted House”, fear not garage collectors, this is a well produced studio album. Firstly Lolly’s vocals are pleasing to the ear if you are a fan of Gary Loizzo of The American Breed. Secondly their choice of covers are very good i.e. Satisfaction, Blood Pressure, etc. but their originals are even better! Most have tense guitar picking intros straight out of the garage punk journal! If your turntable has a tempo control just lower the speed a bit and you’ll see just how REDBONE would have done this same material. Brilliant beyond brilliance. 
Mercury Records had so many impressive artists like Blues Magoos, The Mauds, Keith, and others but this one stood head and shoulders above those….by..Kupa99 …~

I have already profiled the recording career of the Vasquez Brothers, Pat & Lolly Vegas (see my Eastside Legends post. In 1966 while under contract with Mercury records they recorded an album entitled “Pat & Lolly Vegas At The Haunted House (Mercury MG 21059/SR 61059). The Hauted House was a popular Hollywood night clubs and Pat & Lolly had a brief gig as the house band. 

Prodeced by Leon Russell & Snuff Garrett, twelve tracks were recorded. The album would suggest that these tracks were recorded live but the sound is far from it. There is no audible crowd noise or stage patter. What we have is a 50/50 mix of soulful covers and original tunes. My favorite song on the album is the original tune "Any Old Time”…~
