IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA (Medusa’s Kiss) is a contemporary Italian group. The members Diego Petrini, Federico Caprai and Simone Cecchini founded it in 2002. The group consists of Simone Cecchini (vocals, acoustic guitar, saxophone), Simone Brozzetti (electric guitar), Federico Caprai (bass), Diego Petrini (drums, organ, piano), Eva Morelli (flute, piccolo) and Daniele Rinchi (violin). The music is very much in the seventies Italian tradition. Of the seventies Italian scene there is similarities to groups such as PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI but even more to the hard rocking groups like OSANNA and DE DE LIND.

The self-tiled debut album was released in 2004. It is an own production but the Black Widow label started to distribute it later. The music in this debut album can be considered art-rock. The keyboards are used sparingly but the sound is still refined due to the successful use of flute, saxophone and accordion. There is a renaissance/baroque tinge in some of the songs and this creates some personality to the group’s overall sound. This is a good and promising debut album and showing that they have some originality as well.

IL BACIO DELLA MEDUSA is an interesting new group that should appeal to fans of the more hard-edged Italian progressive…..~

Six years after the release of Il Bacio Della Medusa’s previous album, ‘Deus Lo Vult’, the Italian band comes up with 'Seme’. The music is a progresive blend of hard rock, folk, jazz, classic rock, typical songwriter’s moments and even country and electronic music!…~

Il bacio della medusa is a band that takes a lot of time. Every few years an album comes out. Of the four published so far, only one has been considered on “the pages”, and that was ten years ago. Do the Italians act too unspectacularly to attract broad international audiences to their works? The few pieces of information about the group are mainly available in the local language (but not even with an entry in the Italian Wikipedia) and thus for the reviewer, as well as the lyrics, difficult to access. The music alone has to speak for itself. And she does. Largely. Almost every title offers a little surprise!

The first impartial impression is deceptive, because here is no Progmetalband at work. Seme comes rough, guitar-heavy and unpolished (with a fine solo between 5:50 and 7:15), the vocals are celentano-like, the alto saxophone underlines the dark accents. But already the second piece, La Sonda, like the rest, is soft-edged, but shows the tremendous versatility of the ensemble: lovely flute and synthesizer tones and smooth vocals determine this folky song. In general, the rather quiet songs of Il Bacio della Medusa are in the Italian tradition of the Seventy arrested, the keyboard is generally used sparingly, the sound pattern mainly characterized by flutes and saxophones. And by the sometimes too fervent performance of singer Simone Cecchini ( 5 e ¼, Il Sentiero di Luce, Sudamerica ), who also has screams in the best David Byron manner in his repertoire ( Animaemotica ).

The tracks, which are eight to nine minutes longer, are enhanced by attractive solos (electric guitar, saxophone, flute), and a lot is also offered rhythmically. 5 e ¼ … Fuori dalla finestra il tempo è Dispari is a breakneck 5/4 (does the somewhat tedious song title refer to it?) With a relaxed piano part. Sveglia !!! , a song that starts with campfire romance, surprised by a sudden hillbilly outburst. Even more successful is Uthopia … Il Non Luogo : A synth groove with lush populated oscillators serves as a framework for the saxophone melody - as in Barbara Thompson’s Paraphernalia ( The Coconut Hurling Game ), but wrapped in a wondrous and impressive 9/8 !

For two songs ( Animatronica Platonica, Animaemotica ) we use drum editors: Animatronica Platonica is ambitious retroelectronic. Retro Electronically? Yes, the arrangement is enriched by extra-synthetic sounding percussion sounds that demonstrate the Platonic connection to the eighty-something drum machines - Linn Drum 9000, Yamaha RX 17, Roland TR 707 and all their names. They are currently quite cheap on well-stocked flea markets. The jagged drum patterns are complemented by sequenced synthesizer chords, as was the case with Stock, Aitken, Waterman. Back then.

At the middle of the term, it gets a bit less stringent. South AmericaThere are supposedly only on CD, not on vinyl or cassette (sic!). A sales trick? Anyway, it’s the first and only song that can not convince. Jesters will argue that informers deliberately increased the vinyl output. Not to counter the retro passion with the perfectly proportioned sound carrier, no, but to escape this one piece. The otherwise unquestionable singer performs in the somewhat annoying ballad a superfluous contest with a plaintive saxophone, and this condition is widened with almost nine minutes - too long, too many conjuring repetitions of the word “South America”, too few variations, too few ideas. The e-piano solo appearing at the end can not tear it anymore.

Whether on cassette or not: Uthopia moves again, as well as “The way of the light” ( Il Sentiero di Luce ), another Celentano-friendly and powerful chanson with flute-beautiful accompaniment and tasteful guitar solo. The successful completion of this listenable retro-affine album, even if you ordered the CD, is Animaemotica . The instrumental is again dominated by Eva Morelli’s competent flute playing, restrained wah-wah rhythm guitar and a few e-pianotopers accompany the action, again a drum machine with patina is used…by…Peter Meyer…babyblaue …prog….~

Contrary to what often happens in the large progressive panorama, populated by numerous and tireless artists with sometimes exaggerated prolificacy, Il Bacio della Medusa has always taken the right time to create a new album, and six years have in fact passed from the previous one “ Deus Lo Vult ”. Nothing to complain, however, when the wait is rewarded by the high quality of the proposal.
“Seed *” is no exception in this sense and, if the breaths of Eva Morelli and the voice of Simone Cecchini represent elements of continuity with the past, everything else is completely revolutionized. We are in fact in front of the most immediate and at the same time more varied record of the Kiss of Medusa, a concentration of hard, folk, jazz and classic rock, songwriting, even country music and electronics!
If it is true that 'prog’ is synonymous with evolution and mixing between musical genres, we are therefore in the presence of a brave album that, even if considerably deviating from the 'classic prog’ coordinates, is, on balance, paradoxically if we want the more progressive and original of the entire career of the Kiss of Medusa !!….~
