Reissue of 1972 private pressing on Clay Pigeon Records, the Brainchild of Vito B. The album was recorded between 1970 & 1971, except for one track, cut in 1964! 

Ever wish you could hear an album that combines the best elements of Stooges-style toughness, 13th Floor Elevators/Red Krayola-style eccentricity, and even adds a touch of what I can only clumsily call “proto-post-punk”? 
Well, what are you waiting for???? THIS IS THAT ALBUM. 
Seriously, even the folkier tracks here just sound wrong in the best possible way. There’s a short electronic/concrete piece (the oldest one on here, dating back to ‘64) and an eight-plus minute HEAV-EEEEEEEEEEEE jam. Everything in between goes from noisy excess to demented druggie folk-rock, all the way to an obvious “21st Century Schizoid Man” swipe/tribute! The variances in style are most likely due to the different lineups, since only Vyto Beleska appears on every track, but I happen to like a bit of variety when done right….dotadot …~



Only comparable to A-Austr in terms of audacity and forward-thinkingness, this is, for me, the pinnacle of the US private press scene, a whirlpool of an album that sucks you in unexpected and never lets breathe until the very last note. Early brainchild of the songwriter extraordinaire Vyto B (who later did a more, um, normal, but no less brilliant and whacked out song cycle on his “Trincentennial 2076” album), First Chips were all around the map from the get-go - there is proto-punk, folk, druggy psychedelia and even radical freeform noise outbursts on “Volume One”, that could easily pass for a decent Nihilist Spasm Band tune. One song is a dead ringer for Pere Ubu (six years before the fact!), another sounds like a lost outtake from the Astronauts’ “Peter Pan Hits the Suburbs” classic (nine years before the fact!). A startlingly inventive record, and one of the few truly mandatory items for both psych and prog collectors. Love has happened again…by…levgan …~
